10 Songs/Pieces of music that I'd take to the desert island...

1 - Dvorak, Symphony for the New World
Almost the first "classical" CD I have, and one that I actually bought. It's truly beautiful, and one that I don't get tired of listening to.

2 - Bruce Cockburn - The Charity Of Night
Hard choice this between a number of songs. If I could take the whole album, I would, but this song will do. The damage and the dying done, the clarity of light. Gentle bows and glasses raised to the charity of night.

3 - Aimee Mann - Red Vines
If there is a more perfect song in the world, I'd like to know what it is.

4 - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Proud Mary
Very reminiscent of my starting university, this is probably my favourite CCR song. John Fogerty's voice is unique in popular music and the attack and verve of this song is incredible.

5 - Mozart - Eine Kleine Nacht Musik
Ok, so it's a bit mainstream, but this always makes me smile. It's got no great depth, no real meaning, but it's exactly as it says on the tin

6 - Coleman Hawkins - Mood Indigo
Didn't take much from my Jazz upbringing. One night travelling abck from swimming, listening to a program on Coleman Hawkins presented by Benny Green. Played my Dad's "The Hawk in Europe" album over and over...

7 - Malcolm Arnold - Second Symphony
Part of my English Composers kick earlier this year. This is such a dark piece of music.

8 - Oysterband - Put out the Lights
Close between this and "I once loved a lass", but this is (a) a song about my hometown and (b) such a gorgeous, singable song. Random voices on a show, wisdom of the radio.

9 - Steeleye Span - Carterhaugh
A take on the Tam Lin tale - I've picked this mostly because it's long, and thus will keep me entertained.

10 - Harry Chapin - Changes
A song that means an awful lot to me, once again reminiscent of a time and a place, but also lyrically significant "I sometimes think the difference is just in how I think and see, and the only changes going on are just going on in me."

Book - Space, James Michener.

Luxury - Assuming I'm not allowed an internet connection, I guess a computer with a solar panel.

Proud Mary

Strange, since ever I heard her singing this song live in Nuremberg about 8 or 9 years ago, I only have the Tina Turner version in my head when I see it mentioned.
