Parable #2
There was once a young man, who was well-educated and materially successful, but he lacked a spiritual dimension to his life. So, he went in search of a teacher.
Eventually, his wanderings brought him to the home of a wise man.
"Master," said the young man, "the world is vast and complex and I know nothing."
The wise man thought for a while before saying "Come with me."
He brought the young man to a tenament building and bade him sit in the basement, there to meditate for several days.
So the young man sat in meditation, in the only patch of light in the great dark basement. And the people who lived in the tenement threw their refuse and excrement through that hole, the better to feed the pigs who dwelt in the basement.
And so the young man sat and meditated as the steaming piles of crud grew about him. And after many hours, two pigs approached him.
One pig said to the other, "Who is this strange fellow?".
"Ah," said the second pig, "we do not know. Some say he is a holy man. Other say he is a shit head." And thus were the pigs enlightened.
