An old cowboy went riding out one dark and windy day
I remember, when I was about eight or nine years old, switching the television on to a music show. In the middle of a band, a tall figure dressed in black was singing a song about a cowboy. I was transfixed...
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way
The next weekend, Mum took me to a record store (I can't remember which one), and bought me "The Very Best Of Johnny Cash".
When all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw
I listened to that album over and over, but eventually I put it away. I moved on to other things, most not country, some country stuff. Suzy Bogguss, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Trisha Yearwood, Southern Pacific, Carlene Carter, Lucinda Williams.
Plowing through the ragged sky, and up a cloudy draw.
Recently, partly as a result of his 70th birthday, I went back to those songs that I loved so much. And found that they were even more wonderful than I remembered.
It was just announced that Johnny Cash died last night.

All the more reason to play something at the next Octaine, as I had planned to, anyway.
