After reading
Women know that washing machines have programmes for every kind of fabric, colour and quantity and use them appropriately. Men will put a months supply of laundry through the 40 degree cycle (safest guess), regardless of any other detail.

From here.

The following conversation ensued.

Me : That's worryingly true.
Workmate John : Yes.
Me : What temperature do you do your washing at?
WMJ : Um...
Me : I bet it IS 40 degrees.
WMJ : It could conceivably be the same temperature that the person who owned the house before me did his washing at.

I can safely say that after over 7 years of doing my own washing, I haven't yet accidentally dyed anything...

I can safely say I wash ALL my clothes on the same setting. If something seems delicate or extra special, I'll just wash it by hand. I'm too lazy to mess with the stupid machine, but I'll take time to do it by hand. :P
