10 things ya da ya da ya
10. At one point in time I was ranked in the top thirty swimmers in the UK at 200m Backstroke and 1500m Frontcrawl.
9. I once appeared in 'Minder' as "one of group of kids watching aeroplane"
8. At the queens sixtieth birthday celebration, my school was one of the 'choir' groups at the front who knew the words and had practiced. I can still remember them.."We saw your car, hurrah hurrah, arriving at the gate, we saw you wave your hand as you went through"
7. I played Chess for School and University. I'm not great, but I know the difference between the Ruy Lopez and the Giuco Piano.
6. Until I went to work, pretty much everyone called me "Bob" I hated it, but there are still people around who call me it (and who I let because it's less fuss to change). Do so and be ignored.
5. I have lost every game of Warhammer 40K I have ever played.
4. I started Cam because my then housemate worked in Games Workshop with Steve Rowsell and she dragged me and her then boyfriend along to the very first Reading game. I kept going, they stopped immediately.
3. I didn't start Roleplaying until I was nineteen, and I only did that because a Water Polo session was cancelled.
2. I've been to see Eliza Carthy play, in a band or solo, 16 times.
1. Heather is my first girlfriend...isn't that sad...

Have you met her?

However, nearly 4 years ago now, my band supported her for a gig, and she was a complete cow.
I wonder which is the true Liza?
Her music is not bad tho, if you discount some of the excesses of Angels and Cigarettes.
Hmm....
I loved "Eliza Carthy & Nancy Kerr", "The Shape of Scrape", "Heat, Light and Sound" and "The Kings of Calicutt". I liked most of Red Rice. I felt the overblown production and somewhat excessive instrumentation on "Angels and Cigarettes" masked some really good songs.
There's an awful lot of bitterness on that album though.
I don't know, I'll wait and see for the next album...
Re: Hmm....
I'm less keen on EC&NK, but adore Shape of Scrape, Kings of Calicutt, and Heat Light and Sound.
Red Rice is ok. And I deliberately haven't bought Angels as I don't want to give the woman any of my money. I have downloaded a couple of MP3s though, and it's not brilliant.
She was best when her and Nancy were both in Kings of Calicutt - she seemed very happy then. Now there seems to be a trace of dissatisfaction at the world in everything she produces.
Re: Hmm....
Some of that energy was still around for HL&S (particularly Jacky Tar)...
I don't profess to even begin to know what goes on behind the scenes, I just buy the CD's and go to the gigs. And I know that it's always dangerous to try and extrapolate things from what people put in their music.
But the Eliza Carthy that I saw play at Dingwalls earlier this year seemed a long way (in terms of stage persona, in particular) from the one that I saw at the Borderline in 1996.
As far as number one goes...

(Sorry - couldn't resist.)
